completed form to: CHAIRMAN’S ADDRESS 12th June 2008 Following the Society’s AGM on the 11th June, I was duly elected the Society’s Chairman for the year 2008/2009, in the presence of our new President Alderman David Wootton and 12 other members of the Society. We have had a good year under the Chairmanship of Toby Locke and I look forward to my year. Within my chairman’s address I stated that every new chairman wants to make a difference, those before me have and I do not want to be any different. My mission is to push the profile of the SYF within the City, Livery Companies, Guilds and Clubs. We were founded in 1976 with the intention to “Promote an interest in and the interests of the City”. We do this by undertaking activities that may be conducive to the realisation of this aim. Our events are key to this aim as is the support from our President, members, Worshipful Companies, Guilds and Clubs. We have arranged a number of events and it is my intention to form as many links with other Worshipful Companies, Guilds and Clubs as I can within my year. The reason is to raise our profile, to ensure that we meet our aim and hopefully increase our membership. It should be noted that for the Society to arrange wonderful events for the members, there is a group of members who make it all happen. I refer to the SYF committee. As the years move on and those on the committee reach their 40th year, they can no longer sit on the committee. As such younger members are now needed to come on board and help steer our Society in the years ahead. I therefore ask all members under 40yrs to consider this request and decide if they would like to “put something back” into a Society that has always offered. If you feel that you would like to join the committee, then please contact me for a chat. I hope that I will have the opportunity to meet you at our events and look forward to your support of our Society Kind regards Michael Wadood Chairman Email: michael.wadood@mlm.uk.com THE SOCIETY OF YOUNG FREEMEN The Society was founded by the Corporation of London to "Promote an interest in and the interests of the City of London" among Freemen of the City and to undertake any activity that may be conducive to the realisation of this aim TRADITION The Society annually welcomes the Lord Mayor, our patron, to his year in office by participating in the Lord Mayor's Show. Close ties with the City help the Young Freemen to promote, sustain and develop the Corporation of London and its origins which stem from medieval times. Although the Society was only founded in 1967, it is our right and privilege to ensure that the City of London continues to prosper well into the future EDUCATION Many City institutions and their functions are inaccessible to individuals. The Society is well connected and to broaden our knowledge of the workings of the City we have visited, amongst others, Lloyds, the Old Bailey, Middle Temple, the City Markets and many of the Livery Halls including Leathersellers', Armourers', Tallow Chandlers', Merchant Taylors', Butchers', Grocers', Farmers' and Fletchers. EVENTS Each year the social calendar is packed with events and excursions, including wine, sherry and whisky tastings, guided tours of the City of London, the Lord Mayor's Show, traditional ceremonies - such as the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower of London and Beating the Bounds - and carol singing for the Lord Mayor's charity. In addition to this we arrange tours of places of interest in the City and also have a number of informal social events that are held at various locations during the year. These always provide a good opportunity to get to know more about the City in which we live and work, and of course to meet and socialise with other members of the Society. |
