We are delighted to announce a new initiative from the SYF

To encourage more socialising among the different members of the SYF and to keep expanding our network, we are introducing a regular social event.

Taking place on the first Tuesday of every month, we will kick this initiative off on 5th August at the City Tavern (29-30 Lawrence Lane):

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=532432&y=181212&z=0&sv=EC2V+8DP&st=2&pc=EC2V+8DP&mapp=newmap.srf&searchp=newsearch.srf

We will be there from 6.30pm so come and join us to meet other people in, and associated with, the SYF.

 And do bring your friends!

We are keen to spread the word about the SYF and build the Society into an even stronger force within the City.

From September we will be meeting at 7:15pm following our committee meeting at Guildhall.

We look forward to seeing you at this regular and informal event.

28th June
Visit to the Bank of England and Museum

We meet at 11:30 near the front steps of The Royal Exchange. The Bank of England and Museum is holding an open day as part of the City of London Festival. The Bank of England is the central bank of the United Kingdom. Sometimes known as the ‘old Lady’ of Threadneedle Street, the bank was founded in 1694, nationalised in 1964 and gained independence in 1997. Unsurprisingly the Bank of England possesses a considerable number of items associated with its history. Items form the Bank’s collection are displayed in its museum, where they are used to illustrate the history of the institution and its role today at the centre of the UK economy.

6th October
Dinner at the Oxford and Cambridge Club with the City Livery Club.

Cost: £40 – Number limited to 25 people

Dress Jacket and tie for men, Smart causal for women

Time 6.30pm for 7pm – 10.30pm

Situated in the heart of London close to St. James's Palace, the Club house is arranged as a large 19th century town house with its impressive façade, decorations and furnishings that reflect the spirit of the period. The Oxford and Cambridge Club has been enjoyed by members of Oxford and Cambridge Universities since 1836. The City Livery Club has reciprocal membership with the Oxford and Cambridge Club and we have arranged for a Champagne reception with a three course meal together with two types of wine, within a private room. We will be joined by the President of the City Livery Club.

City of London Briefing is particularly aimed at new Freemen and Liverymen. The briefing provides a short introduction to the work of the Corporation especially the relationship with the Livery Companies.

There is an opportunity to ask questions of the speakers and the briefing is followed by a light finger buffet providing the chance to mix with other Freemen and Liverymen.

8th November
Lord Mayor’s Show

Free Event

Meet 09.30am should finish around 2.30pm (Lunch included)

Dress: Black Trousers for men. Tops will be the SYF jackets.

The Lord Mayor’s procession winds through nearly 800 years of London’s history, marching unscathed through everything from the Black Death to the blitz. In the 17th century it was inconvenienced by the building site that would later become St Paul’s Cathedral. In the twentieth century it was the first event ever to be broadcast live on television. Today, it’s a day out for half a million people, with millions more watching on the BBC. The modern procession is over three miles long and starts at 11am after an RAF flypast. It travels from Mansion House to the Royal Courts of Justice, where the Lord Mayor takes an oath of allegiance to the sovereign before the Lord Chief Justice and the judges of the Queen’s Bench Division. The procession sets off on the return journey from Victoria Embankment to Mansion House at 1pm and returns to Mansion House at about 2.30pm.

After the procession ends, members of the SYF have been invited to join the Worshipful Company of Paviors at the Dogget Coat and Badge public house on the River Thames at Blackfriars Bridge where we will be able to buy refreshments and enjoy the firework display at 5pm.

12th November
Champagne Tasting at the Tallow Chandlers’ Hall with Guild of Freemen

Cost: £28

Dress: Jacket and tie for men; Smart causal for women

As has become the custom, Guild members and their guests will be joined by members of the Society of Young Freemen for this annual tasting event.

In keeping with the Centenary celebratory mood and to rekindle memories of the trip to Reims in September, a variety of champagnes will be tasted and savoured, accompanied by an expert explanation of the grapes that go to make up champagne and the region in which they are grown.

Early December
Talk about the work of the Privy Council with the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators.

Cost TBC

The Privy Council goes back to the earliest days of the Monarchy, when it comprised those appointed by the King or Queen to offer advice on matters of state. As the constitution developed into today's constitutional monarchy, under which The Sovereign acts on the advice of Ministers, so the Privy Council adapted. Its day to day business is transacted by those of Her Majesty's Ministers who are Privy Counsellors, these being all Cabinet Ministers and a number of junior Ministers. Membership of the Privy Council brings with it the right to be called "Right Honourable".

11th December
Carol Service at St Stephen’s Church, Walbrook with Guild of Freemen

Cost: £24

Dress: Jacket and tie for men; Smart causal for women

The SYF has once again been invited to join the Guild of Freemen for their annual Carol Service.  This year, it is being held at the Church of St Stephen, Walbrook, with the choir of the City of London Freemen’s School leading the singing.

TBC December
Singing to the Lord Mayor at Mansion House and then at the local hostelries

Free Event

Our annual trip to the Mansion House to sing carols to the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. All the past Mayors have enjoyed our carols and have always extended their kind hospitality with a good glass of mulled wine and warm mince pies before we make our way around the local inns raising money for the Lord Mayor’s Charity.
